Week 3: Holga Cameras, Assignment 1

Image
I have had an interest in lomography for a couple of years now and never thought I would get the opportunity to learn and use it at university! I have recently bought a Holga myself but have only used half a roll of film so far, so they’re still very new to me.

The assignment (Choose one from the list) & some brainstorming

1. Explore a relationship
partners, friends, siblings, twins, Married couple, parents + children, animals, human + animal, person + a place, person + treasured object, mind body relationship, pregnant woman + her unborn child.
Person & place is the relationship that appeals to me most at the moment. A persons relationship with their home, bedroom, bed, studio etc. Uni, public transport, car, bike. Relationship with food. * MY relationship with food

2. An obsession (person, places, objects)
From what I gather, this should be an obsession personal to myself. The only obsession I have that comes to mind would be chocolate! I really love the Beatles and Coldplay and according to other people I am obsessed by them. Oh, I’m also starting to think I’m obsessed with exercise and going to the gym! Online shopping? I think I could find a way to work with any of these, photographically.

3. Image and text (personal, social or political)
I was a little confused by this one at first.. I could do something based on the media and irony. Text in our environment with a conflicting image in the same place. (Does that make sense!?) I probably won’t use this idea for this particular assignment as it would be too risky. Opportunities for such photos would be hard to find, I think it’s more something I would photograph as I come across them rather than a series I would try and complete within a week. I don’t even know if this idea fits into the ‘image and text’ category but this is what came to mind and I think it would work best with a holga camera. Here’s a couple of (crappy) examples of the basic concept that I found on google.

4. Clothes you like or dislike (a lot can be implied by the way a person dresses)
I like the sound of this one. This is the option I thought I was definitely going to do at first. Now that i’m actually thinking about it, I have nothing… I like that the way a person dresses can say a lot about them as a person but if you don’t know this person the judgements we make on them based on their clothing is only an assumption. Perhaps I could photograph people in clothing that would attach a common judgement which is incorrect, while showing something that hints the person’s true ‘colours.’ I don’t know. I’ve just realised how bad I am at explaining ideas. I might get back to this one…
